What changes between margin modes
This is a conceptual comparison. Bybit UTA selects margin mode at account level; other venues may differ. Check automatic margin replenishment separately.
| Mode | Main scope |
|---|---|
| Isolated | Allocated position margin and replenishment settings |
| Cross | Eligible collateral, other P&L and account maintenance requirements |
| Portfolio | Venue-specific portfolio risk assessment |

A hypothetical margin calculation
Illustrative assumptions: 0.2 BTC at a valuation price of 50,000 USDT gives 10,000 USDT notional. At 10× leverage, simple initial margin is 1,000 USDT. With a hypothetical 0.5% maintenance rate and zero deduction, simple maintenance margin is 50 USDT.
This example excludes fees, funding, collateral haircuts, unrealized P&L and extra margin. Actual Bybit linear-contract requirements use mark-price valuation and may include estimated closing fees. The hypothetical rate is not an exchange quote.

Can one maintenance rate cover every position size?
Risk tiers can change maintenance rates, deductions and leverage limits. Bybit considers relevant positions and active orders, so held quantity alone may not identify the applicable tier.

Questions and answers
Does cross margin prevent liquidation?
No. Liquidation can occur when account maintenance requirements are no longer met. An estimated liquidation price does not capture the entire account’s risk.
Does equal leverage imply equal required collateral?
Not when notional value, contract, margin mode, tier, fees or collateral valuation differ. Inspect the actual order confirmation instead of comparing leverage alone.
